Introduction

On August 8th, 1991 the Gabin Radio Tower, the tallest tower ever built, collapsed at reconstruction work. It was never rebuilt, because of protests from people of Gabin, who feared health damages of the strong radio transmitter, which used it, although there was no proof.

However, it was the tallest tower ever built on earth and it was much taller than anything other built in Europe and so we want to make a festival remembering at the 15th anniversary of its death. This festival is called Gabin Tower Memorial Festival and takes place from August 4th, 2006 to August 6th, 2006 on the site where Gabin Radio Tower once stood.

This was it – Gabin Radio Tower, the tallest thing ever built!

Programme

The Gabin Tower Memorial Festival will be an electronic music festival. It will have five semi open-air floors, all on solid ground, so bad weather will be no problem. On three floors Goa music will be plaid and on the other two more commercial-like techno music.

Further there will be two floors in the former transmitter building with conventional disco music and some special amusements.

Gabin Tower Memorial Festival will not just be a poor music festival. We will also make some special highlights. On each evening at night time, we will open containers with helium filled balloons, each having a glow stick inside or carrying a glow stick. The balloons rising up to the sky will offer a fascinating view for all visitors!

There will be also two conventional fireworks, the first on Sunday August 6th, 2006 at 0.15 and the second at the same day at 22.00.

On the site, where Gabin Radio Tower stood, a laser beam will be directed vertically into the sky during the whole night. It should remember by its shape the contour of the former tower.

In the former transmitter building, each guest can take part at a pickpocket contest. He must try to steal a doll equipped with sensor equipment from he pocket. We have several dolls with multiple difficulty degrees.

On each floors music will be run all over the time, except at the time just before of the balloon ascents. This should prevent, that people miss them.

At this time some special transmissions your PC soundcard(!) can receive are done!

Ground Dipoling – a speciality for technical freaks

A further attraction for the technically interested festival visitors, is the ground dipoling. According to international and Polish laws everyone may run a transmitter with a frequency below 10 kHz. In reality nearly no one does this, because such a transmitter would require a two large antenna and can be only used for telegraphy.

Nevertheless, there are a few radio amateurs, which tried it. They used a ground dipole as antenna. A ground dipole are two electrodes in the earth, as far as possible away from each other, which are connected with the output of the transmitter. They form with the conductive ground an antenna.

On Gabin Tower Memorial Festival, we have such an installation. When music is turned off at stage 1 for the balloon ascents, the music amplifiers of this stage will be connected by an sine oscillator with a frequency of 9975 Hertz, which is modulated by a short message in Morse code. The speakers will be disconnected at these break and the ground dipole will be activated. It would be an interesting question how far this signal could be received! A simple way to do it can be found on http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Electronics:VLF-reception_with_the_PC . Of course this is not the only possible method!

The Ground Dipole will not be dismantled after the end of the festival. It will be useable for radio amateurs until August 13th, 2006. On August 8th, 2006 at 18 o’clock, the exact 15th anniversary of the collapse of the radio tower a special transmission in Morse mode will take place. It will last 5 minutes.

Because the amplifiers of stage 1 has to be dismantled after the end of the festival, each radio amateur has to bring his own amplifier to the ground dipole. The transmission on August 8th, 2006 18 o’clock is made by members of Polish Amateur Radio Society using their own amplifier.

QSL-cards are available. Please write your reception report to upper mentioned address and do not forget where and how you made your reception. The person, which will be able to receive the signals in greatest distance, will get a nice prize.

The Balloons

We will release two types of balloons. Small transparent latex balloons with two light sticks in it and bigger balloons used for meteorological purposes carrying a light stick on it. Each balloon will also carry a small label with the name of the festival. If you find such a balloon, then send it back to the upper mentioned address (the same as for QSL-cards), but do not forget your postal address and the place where you found it on the letter. The finder of the balloon, which flew longest distance will get a nice price.

Laser

As laser for the light sculpture a He-Ne Laser with an output power of 10 watts is used. It is directed vertically into the air. If the ISS will fly directly over Gain, the astronauts will be able to see the laser beam very well. During Gabin Tower Memorial Festival the airspace over the area is closed for aircraft, because the laser beam would be extremely dangerous for the eyesight of pilots.

Entrance

Visiting Gabin Tower Memorial Festival costs 60 Zloty per Person. Each ticket is valid for 8 hours. During this time one can leave the festival area and can come back again without paying a new fee. Of course one can stay with the ticket as long as he wants on the festival area, but he has to pay after 8 hours a new fee, when he left the festival area and wants to come back again.

Camping

We offer a well fenced-in ground for camping with tents and caravans. The costs are  240 Zloty per night for tents and 320 Zloty for caravans or mobile homes.

The camping site is approximately 500 metres away from the next music area, so noise will be no bigger problem.

Parking

For people who want to come to Gabin Tower Memorial Festival, we can offer a lot of parking lots on harvested fields and in the industrial area Konstantynow. Further there will be a bus shuttle to Gabin Centre, which runs every 15 minutes and costs 8 Zloty per person.

Pictures

The Festival was visited by 18043 people. The maximum count of people on the festival site was in the night from August 5th, 2006 to August 6th, 2006, when there were 9413 people. The whole festival took place as scheduled and there were no larger incidences.

The VLF signal of the ground dipole could be received at all transmissions in Konstantynow, Gabin and Lwowek. The farthest reception took place of the transmission on August 6th, 2006, 0.10 – 0.30, which was received by Jan Kolwotzky, a radio amateur in Pacyna. He used as reception antenna an abandoned electric fence, that he connected with the soundcard entrance of his PC.

Here are some pictures of the event. Many thank to all people who allowed by their work this unique event!
